The Character of Scrooge Essay Example for Free

The Character of Scrooge Essay Dickens proposes that Scrooge is passing up the pointless fooling around by saying, that the outcome of his taking an aversion to us and not making joyful with us, is, as I might suspect, that he loses some lovely minutes, which could do him no mischief. This proposes Scrooge begins to feel a touch of regret, since he turned the welcome down. Miser is compelled to understand that he has botched an opportunity to be joyful with the main family he has left on the planet. At long last, the apparition shows Scrooge two representations of the social circumstance as two kids: Ignorance (a kid) and Want (a young lady), who represent mankinds ruin. Dickens utilizes this embodiment to underscore the purpose of mankinds devastation, for example the soul says, Most of all be careful this kid, for on his temple I see that composed which Doom This connotes if individuals keep on overlooking poor people, society will disintegrate. In this fight Scrooge feels new feelings, for example, lament for not paying his representative Bob Cratchit enough cash, since he lives in neediness with a gigantic family and a disabled child, and more lament for not going to the welcome from Fred. Additionally, he feels much more troubled and some joy for Freds games and the giggling, Scrooges family had without him. The apparition of Christmas yet to come speaks to death and judgment, this apparition is otherwise called a ghost since it is wearing a dark shroud which disguises its face and it doesnt express a word to add to the sullen environment. They visited a house where there was one little bunch of representatives with a woman attempting to sell some of Scrooges assets, he sees no one is irritated with his passing, however rather striking his hose and auctioning off his property. I trust he didnt kick the bucket of anything getting Eh? Dont you fear that. This shows individuals are kidding over his demise and nobody thinks about his takeoff from the substance of the earth. He is disturbed that nobody thinks about his passing, everything they can do is chuckle and endeavor to make a benefit from his assets. Penny pincher inquires as to whether there is any individual in the town, who feels feeling brought about by this keeps an eye on death Show that individual to me, soul They go to the Cratchits house, yet The main feeling that the phantom could show him, brought about by the occasion, was one of joy. This underscores nobody preferred him and thought about him by any stretch of the imagination, so they were not miserable to observe his demise. Sooner or later, they come back to the Cratchits house where Bob has quite recently come back from work. Dickens causes Scrooge to feel hopeless, lament and blame that he didn't offer his assistance to spare Tiny Tim from kicking the bucket, by making the Cratchit family progressively discouraged, for example, My little, little youngster! Cried Bob. My little youngster! He separated at the same time. This causes the peruser to feel compassion toward the Cratchits and outrage towards Scrooge, as he didn't help a poor family at need. Likewise, it causes Scrooge to feel awful and he understands that he should alter his way of living and become a superior individual, to prevent these discernments from occurring. Fight four is an especially strict segment of the book, as it manages Scrooges reclamation and good reorganization. The language utilized by Dickens is like that utilized in a strict instructing, for instance: Oh chilly, cool, unbending, awful passing, set up thine raised area here. This scriptural language is intended to make us mindful that as perusers we are being shown an ethical exercise. All Christians accepted unequivocally in paradise and damnation; the idea of spending the remainder of time everlasting in heck, scared most Christians, so even the meanest of individuals would think about changing their best approaches to paradise. In fight five, Scrooge stirs on Christmas day as a changed man. He purchases the biggest turkey around and gives it to the Cratchits. Sick send it to Bob Cratchits! This shows Scrooge has at long last changed and he is presently a superior man, as he is being much increasingly liberal. Dickens shows that Scrooge has taken in his ethical exercises and isn't returning to his old ways, he does this by this persistent happiness, care and liberality, all through the character of Scrooge in fight five, for instance: Heres the turkey. Hallo! Challenge! How are you! Cheerful Christmas! This again accentuates Scrooge has acknowledged and recognized his flaws and transformed them; in addition to he gives bunches of cash to poor people, Scrooge says, not a farthing less This again shows Scrooges liberality, poor people and the two noble men were thankful. He additionally commends a flawless Christmas with his nephew; Dickens shows this by saying, Wonderful gathering, great games, superb unanimity, won-der-ful satisfaction This burdens the progressions Scrooge has made and that he is making some heavenly memories with his family, finally. The following morning Scrooge was at his office prepared to meet Bob Cratchit and give him a compensation rise, he says Ill raise your pay, and try to help your battling family And that is actually what Scrooge did, he didn't simply raise Bobs pay, however he became like a second dad to Tiny Tim, who didn't pass on. There are numerous references to paradise in this fight, for example, I am as cheerful as a holy messenger, He went to chapel and God favor us, each one! rather than the references to hellfire when he was tightfisted, gutless and had a cool heart, for example, It is destined to meander through the world, periods of unremitting work by undying animals, for this world must pass time everlasting and dim ace! This makes the feeling that Scrooge was going to hellfire in fight one since he was closefisted, unfeeling and uncharitable. Dickens shows a social exercise to us, close to the finish of the book, so we recall it. He instructs us not to stress if individuals chuckle at the unexpected change in you as long as you are carrying out beneficial things that is the only thing that is in any way important, for example, Some individuals giggled to see the modification in him, yet he let them snicker His own heart snickered: and that was very enough for him. This puts accentuation on Scrooges renewal and affirms that Scrooge has improved and for good. A Christmas Carol is a reversed disaster, since it has five fights like the five demonstrations of a Shakespeare play; yet Scrooge starts a wanton, savage, resentful and uncharitable and closes a cherishing, caring liberal man with a more grounded, hotter heart, particularly to poor people and destitute. Through the character of Scrooge, Dickens planned to change the perspectives on society by indicating the rich individuals, who might have perused the book that they were Scrooge (not sharing their riches; being grouchy and cutthroat). It mirrors that cash doesn't prompt bliss, yet living an excellent Christian, moral life does. As the book progresses forward, Scrooge turns out to be increasingly more eager to gain proficiency with his ethical exercises, for instance: As I probably am aware your motivation is to benefit me, and as I would like to live to be another man from what I was This demonstrates his excitement to pick up information on his good and social exercises and his acknowledgment of his shortcomings. Christianity was a huge issue during the 1840s, and consuming in hellfire would have made many individuals change their hopeless, stingy ways. This Christian subject is set all through the book and in the event that you apologize your ways you will be spared (go to paradise). Dickens utilizes Christmas since it is an event when liberality, abundance and fondness ought to be in our souls as a chance to pass on this message of noble cause.

Catchphrases: possibility hypothesis, objective way hypothesis, administration, and the board. Fiedler Contingency Theory versus House-Path Goal Theory Introduction Leadership is progressively turning into a fascinating subject of study with different hypotheses rising to clarify why a few heads are more compelling than others are. Such hypotheses open up our brains to the different authority draws near and enhance our initiative abilities. The speculations incorporate quality hypotheses, force and impact speculations, social speculations, possibility hypotheses, and way speculations. This exposition will concentrate on Fiedler’s Contingency and House’s Path Theory as models of breaking down initiative (Lussier and Achua, 2010). Fiedler’s possibility hypothesis and its materialness Fiedler’s possibility hypothesis is the brainchild of Fred Fied ler a researcher who studied authority and character. The model sets that there is no standard style of authority rather; the administration styles embraced rely upon the circumstance and conditions. All things considered, the administration style relies upon the circumstances positive. The initial phase in the model is recognizing the authority style. Fiedler holds that administration styles are fixed and can be estimated through a model he alludes to as the Least Preferred Coworker (LPC) scale. The scale expects one to consider the individual they appreciate working with the most and rate them for each factor at that point give them a score. The elements incorporate benevolence, participation, pleasance, truthfulness, reliability, generosity, brightness, receptiveness, strength, tranquility, and acknowledgment (Nohria and Khurana, 2010). In the event that the individual scores high, at that point you are a relationship-situated pioneer. In the event that the score is low, at that point you are an undertaking focused pioneer. This infers task arranged pioneers have progressively negative LPCs. Fiedler likewise alludes to them as low-LPC pioneers (Lussier and Achua, 2010). He clarifies that such pioneers are compelling in task fulfillment and fast in arranging gatherings to achieve a specific undertaking. Relationship building isn't their need. Then again, the relationship-arranged pioneers have LPCs that are progressively positive. They are otherwise called high-LPC pioneers. They center around close to home associations and are successful in keeping away from administrative clash. They can likewise settle on complex choices (Sadler, 2003). The following stage to one’s sort of initiative is through situational idealness. Fiedler relates this to three components. First is the pioneer part relations, which is the trust, and certainty the group has in their pioneer. A pioneer that is trusted is in a more ideal circumstance than one who isn't. At that poin t there is the undertaking structure, which is the clearness or unclearness of the errand being performed. Unstructured errands put the group and their pioneer in an ominous circumstance. The latter is the leader’s position of intensity, the more force a pioneer has the more good the circumstance. Application Fiedler’s hypothesis fundamental reason is that an innovator in an exacting and assignment situated condition has various characteristics from one of every a receptive domain. The hypothesis assists with improving pioneer part connections by helping both the pioneers and the gathering individuals to comprehend bunch issues and help fathom them. It additionally takes into account conference and input inside an association. The model gets ready pioneers and other gathering individuals to work with troublesome people (Nohria and Khurana,

What effects does social media have on an individual - Free Essay Example

Sigmund Freud believed that the psyche, what we call our personality, has three structures: the Id, the ego and the superego. The Id is the structure of personality consisting of our base instincts. It is completely unconscious and has zero contact with reality. The ego is the structure that concerns with reality and is considered as the reasoning and decision making part of the personality. Both the Id and the ego have no morality, which is ultimately taken care of by the superego. The invention of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others, paved the way for a virtual human interaction cutting across geographic racial, cultural and socioeconomic boundaries. Social media, which was once created to be a way for people to interact with people from all around the world, has turned into an isolation device for humans to interact with. We as a society and as individuals do not realize that what is known as human civilization is now characterized as a civilization living in two worlds: the real world and the virtual world. The world perceived by Freud is much different from the world we live in today. When Freud created this theory, he could not perceive a world with such advancements in technology, especially those having the ability to change a humans mental state. Social media is used to foster communication. Yes, social media sounds great and its fun to use. But what people dont take into consideration when using social networking sites is the negative effects it has on an individual such as: lowering self-esteem, anxiety, depression and the vulnerability to being catfished or cyberbullied. This is a problem that millions of people are facing, but dont even realize that social media is to blame due to their lack of knowledge on the issue. This problem is growing tremendously and needs to be addressed more seriously. Anxiety is the feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. Depression is a feeling of severe despondency and dejection, both of which if not recognized and treated properly can lead to even more serious problems such as suicidal thoughts or suicide itself. According to Jacob Amedie, social media causes anxiety and depression in two ways: by being constantly alert, and constantly trying to reach perfection. People may not realize it, but as they are sitting there waiting for a new social media message they are forcing their fight or flight limbic system to kick in which causes a release of the stress hormone, cortisol. This may not sound all that bad, but eventually enough of it can cause you to undergo some serious mental changes which could later lead to physical changes. For example, the constant release of the stress hormone cortisol, from heavy social media usage, over time causes damage to your gastrointesti nal tract (gut), which opens the door to an immune-inflammatory response in the body and brain, leading to depression anxiety. When things turn physical, it all of the sudden sounds more serious. Another way that social media causes anxiety and depression, Amedie argues, is through the idea of perfection. The social anxiety of stress is portrayed by trying to project a perfect self at all times. The continuous stress from constantly trying to project an image of perfection? †a perfect career, perfect marriage, perfect life†leads to the release of the exact same hormone, cortisol. This idea of trying to be viewed as perfect leads people to create a false intimacy. Primarily because social media promotes putting up a facade that highlights all the fun, excitement and success we seem to enjoy but tells very little about where we are struggling in our day to day life (Amedie 9). Many would rather embrace this happy illusion of virtual connection rather than share and develop real life relationships. An example showcasing the damage of the false sense of intimacy created by social media is that a friend of mine who goes to the gym often, posted a selfie and it was not received very well on facebook. It started out fine with twenty or so likes, and friendly, encouraging, congratulatory remarks about her getting into shape. But then someone commented negatively on the photo, jeering about her current weight. Other spiteful comments followed, first by Facebook friends she had that I knew about, but then strangers started to insult her appearance as well calling her with ethnic slurs. Eventually she was forced to take the photo down, because the comments were becoming too obscene and could not be ignored any longer. Whether or not social media creates or promotes this issue, people still participate in it partially because they fail to see the dangers in doing so. In a recent study, Joanne Davila and a few of her colleagues conducted an experiment on social networking and depressive symptoms among youth. During the study they came across two related variables: co-rumination and depressive rumination. Co-rumination refers to excessive discussion of problems within friendships, including repeated conversations, conjecture about causes, and heightened focus on negative emotions. Given the frequency that young individuals engage in social networking activities, they are more likely to be involved in co-ruminating. For example, imagine the life of a teenage girl. Social media is the perfect go to medium for these repeated discussions because it allows for the constant rehashing of the conversations over these girls problems, which ultimately causes them to obsess over the problem and prevent them from moving on in life. In the past, girls would write about their problems in journals or confide in peers over the phone. But now social media is the pr imary source for teens to vent current problems in their lives. This is where the issue comes into place. When a teen posts a problem online it is likely to receive both positive and negative feedback and comments, which causes an obsession to develop on this post. Once something is shared online, it can never be taken off; even if the post is erased it can still be taken as a screenshot on another device, leading the sender to further into anxiety and depression. Davila discovered that adolescents involved in co-rumination, are associated with a more immediate and direct negative effect of depression and may encounter more severe symptoms. Depressive rumination refers to passively focusing on symptoms of distress and their possible causes and consequences, leading to a fixation on problems and negative feelings. Davila discovered that individuals who are prone to depressive rumination are more likely to use social networking sites because of their dependent nature and have negative social networking experiences because of their interpersonal problems, and those experiences may be particularly depressogenic because of their tendency to ruminate on them (Davila 2). Besides the fact that social media can cause anxiety and depression, it can also cause other serious problems that are psychologically related. In Online Social Networking and Mental Health, Pantic deals with the affects social media has on the mental health of its users. Pantic states that some scientists have indicated that certain social networking sites activities might be associated with low self-esteem, especially in teens. One of the explanations regarding the negative relationship between social media and self-esteem, is that all social networking platforms where self-presentation is the principal user activity, causes or at least promotes narcissistic behavior. This indicates that individuals with lower self-esteem are more active online in terms of having more self-promotional content on their social media profiles (Pantic 5). For example, the typical Facebook user will every day have multiple visits to his/her own profile page during which he/she will view his/her already posted photographs, biographical data, relationship status, and so on. All of these events, especially in light of similar data obtained from other users profiles, may lead to either a short-term or a long-term reduction in self-esteem. It is probable, however, that the overall impact of social networking sites on self-esteem is much more complex. Constant self-evaluation on an everyday basis, competition and comparing ones own achievements with those of other users, incorrectly perceiving physical, emotional, and social characteristics of others, feeling of jealousy, and narcissistic behavior†these are all factors that may positively or negatively influence self-esteem. Social media is not only capable of shaping or changing a persons personality, but also capable of shaping and changing a persons physical features as well. Kim Harris, a teacher at a Korean school, wrote an article regarding social medias impact on a persons psychological well-being. Harris wrote that social media can shape a persons views and beliefs and the way they see things through adaptation and imitation. Violent content, whether its from an online video game, a live video, or a made-up cartoon, can affect an individual psychologically by encouraging antisocial attitudes and aggressive tendencies among adolescents and adults. Social media exposure is found to be associated with the outcomes of negative self-perception, eating disorders and substance abuse (Harris 3). Looking at the effects of social media on the brain one can see how this has a negative effect on the psychological aspects of ones life. Psychological effects take place due to popular activities online. Cyberbullying is the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature. Paul Malcore stresses that cyberbullying occurs when individuals use technology to write aggressive, embarrassing, or hateful messages to and about peers in order to intimidate, harass, shame, and control them. Malcore states that approximately 80% of teens use a smart-phone regularly, 92% of teens report going online at least once a day, and 56% go online several times a day (Malcore). With social media having such high activity, teens will either witness cyberbullying, be a victim of it, or become a perpetrator. Statistically speaking, 81% of teens state that cyberbullying is easier to get away with than with face-to-face contact. The rest believe that its just entertaining or funny. Many teens also bully because of anger, revenge, or as a way to vent frustrations. Teens hav e also been known to cyberbully because they are bored, have too much time on their hands, or an abundance of tech toys. Cyberbullies may also participate to avoid being bullied themselves. Cyberbullying comes in many different forms. Teens and even adults partake in excluding others from an online group, cyberstalking, gossip, outing/trickery, harassment, impersonation, cyber threats and flaming which is known as fighting online that involves hateful or offensive messages. Cyberbullying is one of the most important and most common forms of social media issue. People dont take into consideration when bullying someone on social media is that cyberbullying often leads to suicide which has in fact increased severely over the years. According to Malcore, cyberbullying victims are 2 to 9 times more likely to commit suicide. Another popular activity on social media is catfishing. This is a trend that is increasing as people are putting more of themselves and their life on social media. Ca tfishing is the act of luring someone into a relationship by means of a fictional online persona. Sue Scheff, a blogger on Huffington Post, wrote an article on catfishing and the issues behind it. Scheff states that catfishing is a trend that is especially popular with predators such as pedophiles, human traffickers and other criminals. Catfishing is an easy method to prey on people, especially those who are uneducated on the problem. A lot of human traffickers use catfishing to entice teens into an industry which holds fake promises of modeling, traveling, becoming famous, and receiving a lot of money (Scheff). Social media is an easily accessible way to indirectly lure children and teens into being kidnapped. In conclusion, cyberbullying and catfishing are two dangerous issues that should be discussed more in depth on ways to resolve this problem. While some people believe that social media only negatively affects an individual psychologically, others seem to believe that social media can also have positive effects on an individuals psyche. When considering the positive effects of social media, it is important to remember that individuals in todays society are hardwired for socialization, and social media makes socializing easy and immediate. Individuals who struggle with social skills, social anxiety, or who dont have easy access to face-to-face socializing with other teens might benefit from connecting with other teens through social media. For example, teens in marginalized groups, including LGBTQ teens and teens struggling with mental health issues, can find support and friendship through the use of social media. When teens connect with small groups of supportive teens via social media, those connections can be the difference between living in isolation and finding support. Although Kim Harriss main focus was on the negati ves, she did however provide a counter argument. In The Impact of Online Social Networking on Adolescent Psychological Well-being, Harris states that certain kinds of media can actually produce positive and pro-social attitudes. Its been proven that social media can even be used to teach problem solving skills. Harris mentions that social media creates learning opportunities, greater access to health promoting information, and ways to socialize. Jacob Amedie focused mainly on the negative effects, but he did mention some positives. Amedie states that social media allows for groups of like-minded people to work together and connect. He expresses that social media also benefits students. Social networking sites help students do significantly better in school by allowing students to connect and interact with one another on assignments through social media platforms. For example, some schools successfully use blogs as teaching tools, which also has the benefit of reinforcing skills in E nglish, grammar, written expression and creativity. Some social media sites have even been known to help raise self-esteem and increase a sense of belongingness. While there are some positives to using social media, the negatives can however, heavily outweigh the positives. Where there is a problem, there must be a solution. The first step in solving this crisis, is to educate individuals on the proper use of social media and the dangers associated with the improper use of sites. Parents should be more responsible with monitoring their childrens social media sites. With the help of parents, cyberbullying and catfishing can be eliminated tremendously. In schools, social media is required to be used by the children for numerous reasons. Instead of only relying on parents to educate their children on the issue, schools should be required to provide social media education classes. Another way to educate people in a much faster way would be public service announcements. All people whether they are children, teenagers or adults, should be educated on the proper use of social media. However, educating people isnt enough; we should also hold social media creators more accountable for the content they allow on their sites. As a last resort, laws could be created to enact, oversight, and enforce penalties on social media abuse. Overall, there isnt much that can be done regarding the use of social media without interfering with the peoples rights as well as those of the corporations. The improper use of social media can have horrifying outcomes that requires our attention. Its a major part of our world today, and will likely become even more so in the future, which is why these issues must be addressed. If these issues remain unsolved the psychological issues people are facing today will only continue to evolve eventually leading to creations of new psychological disorders.

Bcg Matrix - 1487 Words

What is BCG matrix? The BCG matrix is a chart that had been created by Bruce Henderson for the Boston Consulting Group in 1968 to help corporations with analyzing their business units or product lines. This helps the company allocate resources and is used as an analytical tool in brand marketing, product management, strategic management, and portfolio analysis. Analysis of market performance by firms using its principles has called its usefulness into question, and it has been removed from some major marketing textbooks. Understanding the Matrix BCG matrix means of analyzing the balance of an organization’s product portfolio. Further problems include: ââ€" The definition of market growth - What is high market growth and what is low? It is always possible to make a product dominate a market by defining the market narrowly enough. For example, do we consider the entire European steel market, where Usinor would have a small share, or do we take the French segment only, when the Usinor share would be much higher? This could radically alter the conclusions. ââ€" The definition of relative market share. What constitutes a high relative share and a low share? The slaves were compelled to continue supplying forced labor to the Whites. The resultant effect of oppression pushed the slaves to start fighting for the equality. In this case, it is evident that the Civil War was a direct consequence of the American Revolution.[1] All strangers coming into the American lands created excessive anxiety among the Americans. The widespread comfort, the facilities for livelihood, cheap lands and high price of labor are equally observed. Essentially, it is not issues like poverty, tyranny and over competition that produces anxiety, it is the perpetual improvement of the outward condition[2]. Why Women Grow Beards Essays - Facial Hair, Beard, Hairstyles

Why Women Grow Beards A very long time ago, women grew beards. They were not like the beards of men. Women's beards were longer, thicker, and were more beautiful than those of men. The women took good care of their beards. Some became so proud of them that they looked down on men, including their own brothers and fathers and husbands. One of the proudest was Jenny. She and her three sisters were the daughters of a man named Ray. They were admired for their beauty, but they were most admired for their beards. Near their home lived a wealthy and good looking king named Eric. His favorite treasure was his gold pickle ring. His daughters helped him out a lot. One of his daughters saw one day that the servants were very busy, and decided to help them by washing all the plates in the castle herself. She picked them all up but did not realize that one of the plates was the plate on which the ring was kept on. She took the plates, along with the plate with Erics gold pickle ring, down to a stream to wash them. She never saw the ring slip off the plate into the stream. The river carried away the ring, and a fish swallowed it. Downstream, a boy was fishing. He caught enough fish that day to sell some and bring the rest home to his family. After he cooked a fish for himself, he cut it open and found the ring. He took the ring to town the next day and sold it to a towns-women named Jenny. The king was known and respected by everyone , but the boy did not know that the ring was the king's, Jenny did, but was too proud and selfish to return it to the king. Instead she hid the ring inside her long, thick beard. It was not long before King Eric discovered that his ring was missing. No one, including his daughter, had any idea what had happened. The news of the missing ring was announced throughout the kingdom. The fisher-boy heard of it and realized whose ring had been in the fish. Knowing that Eric would not punish him because he didnt know, he ran to the king's servants and told them how he had found the ring and, not knowing whose it was, had sold it to a woman named Jenny. The king's servants searched everywhere for Jenny, but no one knew where she was. She had hid, hoping to figure out a way to keep the ring. Not being able to find her, King Erics servants said that the king will offer to marry any woman who could bring back his ring. No one in town had been told why the servants were searching for Jenny. There was confusion while the women searched every corner of the town. Soon Jenny came walking proudly into King Erics castle. I know where the ring is, she said, I have it. Eric asked for his ring, and she pulled it from her beard. All the servants figured out what she had done. The men-servants were shocked, but the women-servants, also proud of their beards, were amused at how Jenny had fooled the searchers. Eric sent all the women, including Jenny, out of his sight and discussed Jennys punishment with the men-servants. They said that the women were so full of themselves because of their beards. Jenny believed she had power over King Eric and she could trick him into marrying her. At first the angry king wanted to have Jenny put to death, but he was smart enough to wait till he had calmed down. After he settled down, he gave a different order instead. Have the beards of all the women shaved. Have every bit scraped from their faces, even the faces of my wives and daughters. For their beards are full of evil. We know of a paste that will cause hair not to grow. Have it be put on the jaws of all women, so that no girl or woman will ever again grow beards to play men with. Since then, women have not grown beards. Mythology

XYY Syndrome Essays - Syndromes, Cytogenetics, Free Essays

XYY Syndrome Essays - Syndromes, Cytogenetics, Free Essays XYY Syndrome subject = Intro to Biology title = XYY Syndrome XYY Males XYY Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder which affects males due to an extra Y chromosome. Healthy males have 46 chromosomes including one X and one Y chromosome. Men with XYY syndrome have 47 chromosomes, two of which are Y chromosomes. It is not known why the extra Y chromosome occurs. The disorder is present at birth and is estimated to occur in one out of every one thousand live births. In very rare instances, the syndrome has been passed from father to son, but in most cases heredity cannot be established. The characteristics of XYY syndrome are often very subtle and do not indicate and serious chromosomal disorder. Therefore, males with this condition are frequently undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. The primary symptoms include tall or very tall height which becomes evident at the age of five or six, and severe cystic acne during adolescence. Lower than average intelligence and/or behavioral problems, such as an explosive temper, aggressive or defiant actions, or sometimes antisocial behavior are other symptoms. Some individuals with this disorder may also have language difficulties or psychosexual problems. XYY Syndrome is often undiagnosed until tests for other medical reasons are performed. Other than being unusually tall and/or having behavioral problems, in many cases, these boys or men appear normal. Physical characteristics of XYY Syndrome may include an exceptionally long head with a slightly protrusive forehead, long hands and feet, long ears, mild indentation of the breastbone, and/or large teeth. Poor chest and shoulder muscle development is also common. Even though males with this syndrome are large, they tend to be weak and uncoordinated. Some may have a fine intentional tremor, such as shaking hands when the try to drink a glass of water. Occasionally, a bony formation across the joints in the two bones of the forearm resulting in the stiffening of the affected joints may occur. Other occasional symptoms are undescended testicles, a small penis, or an opening located on the underside of the penis. For a long time it was thought that XYY Syndrome individuals had aggressive tendencies often associated with criminal behavior due to the extra Y chromosome. Epidemiological studies suggest that one out of every 35 institutionalized male juvenile delinquents has XYY Syndrome. However, it is now believed by some researchers that this behavior is not due to the extra Y chromosome, but rather to the lower than average intelligence and education levels of these men. More research is needed to understand the role of this chromosomal abnormality on behavior.

Gods and Ducks †Get It Right

Gods and Ducks – Get It Right Gods and Ducks Get It Right Gods and Ducks Get It Right By Maeve Maddox Deus ex machina: from Mod.L. translation of Gk. theos ek mekhanes, lit. the god from the machina, the device by which gods were suspended over the stage in Gk. theaterOnline Etymology Dictionary. I heard an NPR reporter use this expression to refer to a character in the 2001 cult movie Donnie Darko. (Spoiler alert: stop reading now if you dont want to know the ending.) Anyone hearing the reporters use of the expression would have thought that it was just a fancy way of saying a supernatural force that saves someones life in a story. For those who, like me, never heard of Donnie Darko, heres the story according to a summary on IMDb: While sleepwalking, a troubled teenager named Donnie Darko meets Frank, a mysterious personage dressed in a diabolical bunny suit. That same night a jet engine crashes into the Darko house, destroying Donnies empty bedroom. Donnie feels that he was saved from death by Franks supernatural powers. At Franks instigation, Donnie commits several vicious acts of vandalism, but in the end, thanks to a time warp, Donnie is killed by the falling jet engine and the vicious acts remain undone. The NPR reporter called the man in the bunny suit a deus ex machina. Deus ex machina is a plot device. It is a character or an event introduced at the last minute to save a character or resolve the story. An author uses it because hes written himself into a corner. It is unexpected and does not arise from the logic of the story up to that point: The heros car is teetering at the edge of a cliff in a remote wilderness. The front wheels are over the abyss and the hero cant open the door to jump to safety. The hero can do nothing to save himself. Just then, out of the blue, a helpful stranger happens to drive up in a tow truck and pulls car and driver to safety. Thats deus ex machina. Donnies man in the bunny suit does appear suddenly and unexpectedly, but he doesnt resolve the story. According to the film summary, it was Donnies sleepwalking that saved him from being killed by the jet engine. Franks appearance begins a chain of events that advance the story. The plots resolution, however, arises from its internal logic and occurs when Donnie chooses to drive into the time tunnel. For some reason the reporters inexact use of deus ex machina reminded me of a political reporters misuse of the expression lame duck. After the November elections in 1996 I heard a reporter, also on NPR, refer to Bill Clinton as a lame duck President. In political terminology, a lame duck is a public official serving out his term after an election. The expression is a negative one, conveying the sense that, since the incumbent will soon be out of office, hes lost all power and influence. Clinton could have appropriately been referred to as a lame duck President after the 2000 elections, but not in 1996 when he was preparing for a second term. It could be argued that both usages described above are more or less correct, but with the vast vocabulary at their disposal, people who use words professionally can be more particular. How does the western model of Internet Banking apply to Russia Dissertation

How does the western model of Internet Banking apply to Russia - Dissertation Example This chapter of the study will therefore spell out the most important aspects of tasks that the researcher put in place as part of data collection. As much as area of the research such as the literature review holds a prospect for answering most of the research questions and by extension achieve some of the research objectives, undertaking primary data collection remains a very useful way of testing secondary data used for the study (Riketta, 2008). This is because with primary data collection, the researcher is offered the opportunity of collecting first hand data that is not distorted or biased. The chapter shall open with the research philosophy that the researcher employed for the primary data collection. This is because the research philosophy will give the reader a general overview of the perspective from which the researcher conducts the remaining parts of primary data collection, whether inductively or deductively. There shall also be other aspects of the chapter such as rese arch design, qualitative design, research strategy, research scope, as well as data quality issues. By the close of the chapter therefore, the reader will have a vivid understanding of the entire approach that involved the conduct of the research. 3.1 Research Philosophy Saunders et al (2003) notes the research philosophy reflects the perception that the researcher holds about how knowledge is constructed. This is common with qualitative research of this nature because in qualitative research, the researcher seeks to explore knowledge about an ongoing situation, of which the research is being conducted (Ainin, Lim and Wee, 2005). In the current study, the ongoing situation can easily be referred to as internet banking in Russia and how this is influenced by western model of internet banking

Relationship between Lung and Tooth Abscess Assignment

Relationship between Lung and Tooth Abscess - Assignment Example If tooth decay is discovered early, cavities that could develop into abscesses can usually be treated. Since both diseases develop due to poor oral hygiene, practicing proper oral hygiene is the best way to prevent oneself from contaminating the abscesses. Avoiding cigarette and alcohol consumption not only serves as a prevention measure for a tooth abscess but also for a lung abscess. In ancient times, lung abscesses posed challenges to practitioners because of the long duration of the illnesses. A lung abscess was commonly associated with morbidity and mortality and supportive care was the major form of treatment. According to Ferri (2013), â€Å"a lung abscess is an infection of the lung parenchyma resulting in a necrotic cavity containing pus† (p. 9). In order to better comprehend this infectious disease of the respiratory tract, one needs to know the risk factors associated with the disease. Ferri’s (2012) study found the risk factors to be alcohol-related problems, seizure disorders, cerebrovascular disorders, drug abuse, poor oral hygiene and obstructive malignant lung diseases. According to Joiner, â€Å"a dental abscess develops when a pus-filled sac forms in the tissue at the root of a tooth† (2001, p. 348). It is known to bring intolerable pain to the affected. The tooth usually throbs and aches to make chewing or biting very painful. If one does not seek medical care, the infection spreads through the surrounding tissue and bone, causing the neck and face glands to become swollen. This is usually accompanied by a severe headache and fever, which are the common symptoms of infections. Joiner (2001) adds that the causes of a tooth abscess are bacteria accumulation in the deep pockets found between gums and teeth or infections on the roots of teeth. Numerous symptoms are observed in persons suffering from lung and tooth abscesses. These symptoms are usually prolonged occurring for weeks to months. For a  lung abscess, they include fever, chills and sweats, coughs, sputum production and amphoric breath sounds (Ferri, 2012).

warriors of god :: essays research papers fc

Warriors of God by James Reston Jr. is a non-fictional view of the third crusade. This particular crusade spanned from 1187-1192, containing many gruesome battles and a lot of intense moments between Islam and Christianity. Reston supplies the reader with a little background to the third Crusade when he talks about the first Crusades happening since 1095. Reston gives a fairly impartial view of this holy war. He discusses the battles, politics, and emotions of the Crusade as an outside party and if he takes any side at all it is with the Muslims. He often speaks badly of King Richard and he speaks well of Saladin, the sultan. He portrays Richard as a greedy, anti-Semite, who is intolerable of other religions, while he shows Saladin as tolerant to the Jews, reasonable, and an overall good leader. Reston wrote this book mostly to inform readers about the third Crusade but also to add some of his own insights. His thesis was a little unclear but he stated that the Crusades were the most violent event in history all the way up to Hitler’s rein. Reston did a good job in proving this when he told of battles and then analyzed them. He told of a time when King Richard had twenty thousand Muslims executed and when Saladin had Reginald of Chatillon beheaded along with many other Christian prisoners.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Reston is a well established writer, his most famous work being Galileo. Reston made a very extensive bibliography with many primary and secondary sources. He had about forty-five primary sources and about ninety secondary sources so I would say that he is now an authority on the third Crusade and probably all of them for that matter. Saladin says straight out in this historical book that Richard the Lionheart, King of England is a homosexual. This has been debated and so one really knows for sure one way or another so to call him an unquestionable homosexual is a little unusual. Reston says that Richard was gay with his childhood friend who in the future would rule France, Phillip Augustus. This relationship would later come into play in the book when they have to work side by side to overthrow the Islamic Empire.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The way that Reston told the story in Warriors of God was very well done. He would tell a chapter from Richard’s point of view and then one from Saladin’s.
